Each year, at the end of London International Shipping week, Ince & Co enter a team into the famous OSCAR Dragonboat Race. The aim of the event is to raise funds for the fantastic charity OSCAR (the Ocean and Shipping Community Advancing Children’s Health and Research) which supports areas of urgent need at Great Ormond Street Hospital and the UCL Institute of Child Health. The campaign is the inspiration of Ince alumnus Phil Parry, Chairman of Spinnaker Consulting Ltd, whose son Oscar received life-saving care at GOSH.
The event is always well attended by people across the shipping industry, amongst which are insurers, law firms and ship-owners. It’s a fantastic afternoon of drumming, frantic paddling and a good sprinkling of competitive spirit. Ince’s team is usually a mix of members of the Shipping team and trainees and in the past has included representatives from our various foreign offices. After completing the race, the team members have the opportunity to catch up with professionals from across the industry over an afternoon of BBQ and drinks, and (hopefully) taking the opportunity laud Ince’s rowing prowess over our rivals!
Since its inception in 2011, the OSCAR campaign has raised over £1.5 million, helping to refurbish vital facilities and funding pioneering research into childhood cancers and immune diseases at GOSH and the ICH. As well as making a standalone donation to enter the boat race, Ince & Co fundraise in various ways including by organising special events and holding a prize raffle. We are proud to continue our support of this excellent cause.
